Family mediation in Ireland: what does it cover?

How mediation can help separating couples reach workable decisions.

Reviewed August 2026. This is general information, not legal advice.

A structured negotiation

A trained neutral mediator helps separating people identify issues and explore agreement. The mediator does not decide the outcome or act as solicitor for either person.

Issues mediation can cover

Sessions can address parenting, the home, maintenance, financial disclosure and practical communication. Complex pension, tax, business or valuation questions may require specialist input.

Legal advice remains important

Each person should obtain independent legal advice before binding terms are signed. Mediators generally do not provide legal advice.

Not suitable in every case

Urgency, domestic abuse, coercive control, hidden assets or a severe imbalance may make another process necessary. Suitability should be assessed carefully.
